How this drywall estimate works

Drywall sheet count depends on the net surface and the sheet size you can handle. Room mode gives a fast wall-and-ceiling estimate; direct mode works from a measured coverage area.

Formula

Calculate gross walls, subtract openings, optionally add the ceiling, apply the allowance, then divide by sheet area.

Worked example

For a 12 × 10 × 8 ft room, start with 352 sq ft of walls. Subtract openings, add a ceiling only when needed, and round the adjusted target to 4 × 8, 4 × 10, or 4 × 12 sheets.

Before you buy

Plan how sheets will move through doors and stairs before choosing the largest format. Include corner bead, screws, tape, compound, and a cut plan separately.

Assumptions

Defaults are starting points. Replace coverage, density, package yield, spacing, and allowance values with the product or plan you are actually using.

Limitations

This does not create a hanging layout or account for fire-rated assemblies, moisture-resistant products, offcuts, blocking, soffits, or local code.
