How this flooring estimate works

Flooring should be measured by room, then ordered by the carton. This keeps the cutting allowance visible and prevents the box count from hiding how much coverage is actually being purchased.

Formula

Included room area − exclusions = net area. Add the allowance, then divide by box coverage and round up.

Worked example

A 20 × 15 ft room is 300 sq ft. With a 10% allowance the target is 330 sq ft; at 22 sq ft per box, the purchase is 15 boxes.

Before you buy

Confirm carton coverage, plank length mix, lot or dye number, transitions, stair pieces, and whether the installation pattern needs a larger allowance.

Assumptions

Defaults are starting points. Replace coverage, density, package yield, spacing, and allowance values with the product or plan you are actually using.

Limitations

The estimate does not create a plank layout or account for stairs, closets with different products, subfloor repairs, underlayment, transitions, or labor.
