How this tile estimate works

Use this calculator for floors, walls, backsplashes, or other tiled sections. It keeps project area, exclusions, tile size, allowance, and carton coverage separate so the piece estimate does not hide the whole-box purchase.

How to measure

  1. Measure each floor, wall, or backsplash section that will receive tile.
  2. Subtract islands, openings, or other areas that will not be tiled.
  3. Enter tile size and the allowance. Add carton coverage in Advanced settings for a whole-box count.

How the estimate works

Subtract exclusions from the included area, apply the allowance, then divide by one tile's area for a piece estimate or by carton coverage for whole boxes.

Worked example

Measure each floor, wall, or backsplash section, subtract uncovered islands, and use the carton coverage for the purchase count. A separate tile-size count remains useful for layout planning.

Before you buy

Buy from one lot where possible and keep a few spare tiles for future repairs. Confirm carton coverage, shade, caliber, pattern, and the setting materials the product calls for.

Package and supplier details

Tile size, pattern, cuts, breakage, grout joint, carton coverage, shade, caliber, and the shape of the room can change the practical order.

Assumptions

  • Grout gaps do not reduce the project coverage used for the estimate.
  • The allowance is applied to the net project area before rounding.
  • Whole boxes use the carton coverage you enter.

Limitations

The tool does not design layout, grout joints, transitions, substrate preparation, waterproofing, or pattern-specific waste.

Questions about tile

Why should I add exclusions?

Exclusions remove islands, openings, or other spaces that will not receive tile, so the target coverage is closer to the area you will actually cover.

Should I buy by tile count or boxes?

Use tile count for a piece estimate and carton coverage for the practical purchase count. Boxes are rounded up to whole cartons.

Does the allowance include grout?

The calculator treats the allowance as material for cuts and breakage. It does not calculate grout quantity or reduce coverage for grout joints.
