How this gravel estimate works

Gravel is sold by several different units, and its weight changes with size and moisture. This calculator makes the density assumption visible so you can replace the typical planning value.

Formula

Area × depth = volume. Cubic yards × editable tons-per-yard density = estimated tons.

Worked example

At 600 sq ft and 4 inches, the volume is 200 cu ft, or 7.41 yd³. At the typical 1.4 tons/yd³ estimate, that is about 10.37 tons.

Before you buy

Ask the supplier whether its quoted tonnage is loose, delivered, or based on a particular moisture condition. Confirm truck access and the planned base material separately.

Assumptions

Defaults are starting points. Replace coverage, density, package yield, spacing, and allowance values with the product or plan you are actually using.

Limitations

Tonnage is an estimate, not a universal gravel property. This tool does not design driveway base depth, compaction, drainage, or load capacity.
