How this mulch estimate works

Mulch is usually planned by a consistent depth across planting beds. Measure each bed, remove paths or uncovered sections, and use the product bag size only for the final purchase conversion.

Formula

Net bed area × mulch depth in feet = cubic feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards; bags are rounded up from their labeled volume.

Worked example

A 500 sq ft bed at 3 inches needs 125 cu ft, or about 4.63 yd³. With 2 cu ft bags, that rounds to 63 bags.

Before you buy

Check whether a bulk delivery can reach the beds without compacting the lawn. For bags, confirm the actual fill volume and plan where they will be staged.

Assumptions

Defaults are starting points. Replace coverage, density, package yield, spacing, and allowance values with the product or plan you are actually using.

Limitations

The estimate does not predict color fade, settling over a season, slope loss, or the maintenance depth your landscape designer may specify.
