How this mulch estimate works

Use this calculator when planting beds need a consistent mulch depth. Measure each bed, leave out uncovered areas, and use the product's bag volume or bulk price only for the final buying comparison.

How to measure

  1. Measure each planting bed as a rectangle, or split an irregular bed into smaller rectangles.
  2. Add paths, rocks, or bare areas as exclusions if they will not receive mulch.
  3. Choose the finished depth, then enter the bag volume if you want a whole-bag count.

How the estimate works

Multiply net bed area by mulch depth to get cubic feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards, or divide by the labeled bag volume and round up for bags.

Worked example

A 500 sq ft bed at 3 inches needs 125 cu ft, or about 4.63 yd³. With 2 cu ft bags, that rounds to 63 bags.

Before you buy

Bulk mulch can be useful when delivery can reach the beds without damaging the lawn. For bags, confirm the fill volume and plan where the bags will be staged before you spread them.

Package and supplier details

Bag volume, bulk delivery, settling, slope, and the depth you want to maintain all affect the real order. Use the label and your landscape plan for product-specific decisions.

Assumptions

  • The selected depth is applied evenly across the net bed area.
  • Bag counts are rounded up to whole bags.
  • The allowance is applied to the total volume, not each bed separately.

Limitations

The estimate does not predict color fade, seasonal settling, slope loss, or the maintenance depth your landscape plan may call for.

Questions about mulch

Do I need to measure each bed?

Yes. Separate rows help you handle different bed sizes and remove paths or uncovered spaces from the total.

How do I use bags in the result?

Open Advanced settings and enter the bag volume printed on the product. The calculator will round the target volume to whole bags.

Should I add an allowance to every bed?

No. The calculator applies the selected allowance once to the combined net area, which keeps the buffer from being added repeatedly.
