How this sod estimate works
The calculator keeps the math visible enough to check while you measure, without asking you to round each section by hand.
Add a fitting buffer
A 5–10% buffer is common for cuts and small measurement variation. It is applied to the total net area, not each row.
Check pallet coverage
Sod packaging varies. The default planning assumption is 450 sq ft per pallet and 10 sq ft per loose roll; confirm your supplier’s format.
Choose pallets or loose rolls
Pallets make a simple safe order. If loose rolls are sold, the mixed recommendation can reduce unused coverage while keeping whole packages.
Worked example
A 1,500 sq ft net lawn with a 5% buffer has a 1,575 sq ft target. With 450 sq ft pallets and 10 sq ft rolls, the minimum-overage mix is 3 pallets + 23 rolls.
Formula
Included rectangles − excluded rectangles = net lawn area. The fitting buffer is applied once to that net total, then the target is compared with whole pallets and loose rolls.

Confirm whether your supplier sells full pallets, loose rolls, or both, and ask which coverage figure applies to the sod you are ordering. Check delivery timing and whether the product must be installed the same day.
Limitations
This is a planning estimate for rectangular sections. Sloped, curved, irregular, or heavily cut-up lawns can need more material than the modeled allowance suggests.
